The beginning of the year is a popular time for forecasts and future trends. This naturally also applies to new gastronomic trends. For example, the site gesundheit.de has identified some food trends. According to this site, bulgur, one of the main foods in the Middle East, will become a hit in 2016. This is because, similar to rice, durum wheat semolina fills you up for a long time and is therefore recommended as part of a diet. The desire to have something exotic on a plate can also be seen in the other favorites of the year: along with the traditional Chinese restaurant, Thai, Vietnamese and Korean food is coming into fashion. Particularly popular here are noodle dishes like Soba and Udon noodles and fine Chinese and rice noodles. And Sake, Japanese rice wine – drunk cold or hot – is back on the menu. Vegetables are becoming more and more popular as a main dish and the desire to be a (part-time) vegetarian continues to grow; roasted and steamed vegetable dishes could well become stars on the plate. A great tip is also jalapenos – small, relatively sharp peppers. Especially trendy are the smoked versions, called Chipotle. Finally, the in-snack of the year is popcorn – sweet, salty, in soups and salads, in starters, main courses and desserts. Popcorn ice cream is the advertised summer hit! We’ll have to wait and see.
