Snow-free winter tourism?

More hot summer days and fewer winter days with snow – these are the current forecasts of climate researchers that have just been discussed in Paris. Although gastronomy, ski school and cable car operators in the Alps are satisfied with the demand for now, they are increasingly looking for new solutions and offerings that take the weather changes into consideration. For many destinations, snowmaking systems appear to be a way to at least slow down the changes.

But the question is often posed whether other factors, such as demographic change, transport developments, demands for sustainability, etc., should not also be considered, as their interaction may generate new forms of winter tourism. General urbanization causes a growing desire for an experience in nature that is as pure as possible.

“Sustainable tourism” does not mean sleeping in hay and dining around a campfire. On the contrary (although such rustic winter offerings really do have their charm), high-quality hotel and restaurant services can open up attractive areas of hospitality here. Individual success stories already show that a “snow-free” season can result in a strong demand in the future when it comes to winter sports resorts because problems can be a gift when they force us to find new ideas.
