Four umbrellas on the pier are a new and very popular sensation for the tradition-steeped Undosa am Starnberger See. Rain gutters and heaters create a special open-air experience, even in inclement weather. Apart from the challenge of a stable anchoring on the wooden pier, umbrella posts were designed off center to allow for smooth serving lanes – once on the pier, there is no bypass and the demand is always great even when the sun isn’t shining.
Exceptional concepts and technical solutions are necessary to achieve optimum performance and use. Simple large umbrellas do not provide this. And thus sophisticated planning and unique expertise are hidden behind Meissl designs.
No less challenging was the task on the island of Juist in Eidgenuss, formerly Strandhalle J.J. Pabst: directly on the beach exposed to North Sea storms are two newly installed large umbrellas – one of which is motor-operated – that are also integrated right into the terrace with direct connections to the building. A dimensionally accurate design was necessary to withstand storms with wind forces up to 12, as was recently confirmed by the devastating hurricane Niklas.
But sophistication also requires logistics and assembly on the island that is known for being car-free and an umbrella structure weighing more than a ton had to be brought in. But even that is no problem with the necessary experience: just this structure alone consists of no less than nine Meissl large umbrellas and its own umbrella bar!
