“Opening Instead of Closing” – A Series Recommendation with Kira Schinko

“Can the inn be saved?” Since February 18, Kira Schinko has been asking this question weekly in her six-part ORF documentary Opening Instead of Closing. A heartfelt recommendation from us to anyone who still believes in the traditional inn culture in modern times.
More and more Austrian inns are closing their doors. Along with them, important social hubs and the hearts of entire village communities vanish. These are exactly the inns Kira Schinko seeks out on her journey across Austria – to tell their stories and, together with young local restaurateurs, explore how to bring them back to life for a day.
“The inn is so much more than just a place to eat and drink. In an era of digital bubbles, such real-life meeting places are more important than ever,” says Kira Schinko. With her documentary, the host, creator, and producer of Austria’s first “Inn Show” wants to demonstrate that “behind closed doors lies not just nostalgia, but a huge opportunity for the future.”
