Outside, even when conditions turn rough – Meissl in Skagen, Denmark

Projects

Exposed locations call for solutions that can do more. Especially by the sea, outdoor spaces are constantly challenged by wind, salt air, changing weather, and high visitor frequency. At Meissl, these are exactly the kinds of projects we love taking on — most recently bringing us to the very north of Denmark for three new installations in Skagen.

In places like these, good design alone is not enough. Outdoor solutions need to combine protection, stability, and flexibility, while still feeling light, open, and natural within their surroundings. Systems that continue to perform even in rough conditions — whether at the harbour, in hotels, or across highly frequented public spaces.

The result: weather-resistant outdoor spaces that are built to last and make outdoor living possible even when the weather does not always play along.

One example is the Skagen Fiskerestaurant, where fine seafood meets panoramic views at the scenic meeting point of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea:

  • Client: Skagen Fiskerestaurant ApS
  • Location: Skagen
  • Product: 3 × MA large umbrellas, rectangular, 7.50 × 7.15 m incl. textile side walls

In the same town — and under the very same conditions — a new outdoor area was also recently created for the guests of the year-round Plesners Badehotel:

  • Client: Plesners Badehotel
  • Location: Skagen
  • Product: 1 × MA large umbrella, 9.8 × 6.0 m

And Skagen will remain exciting going forward: the next project is already planned for spring 2027 at the Maskinrummet Museum. Known for its historic machinery, maritime heritage, and unique event venue with high visitor frequency, the location — welcoming around 120 cruise ships each year — brings with it not only attention, but also very specific demands for durable outdoor solutions:

  • Client: Maskinrummet Museum
  • Location: Skagen
  • Product: 4 × MA large umbrellas (planned for spring 2027), each measuring 8 × 6 m
